Full or Partial Dentures?
Full or complete dentures
Full dentures can help to restore the ability to eat, speak and smile. As there are no natural teeth left to attach the dentures to, the only means to stabilize the denture is the cheeks and tongue. This, combined with the amount of bone remaining in the jaw, and how the patient wants to look, gives a good indication of the probable treatment outcome.
Partial dentures
If you have all your natural teeth, the loss of a single tooth may seem unimportant, particularly a back tooth, as you have so many remaining. You may not notice the inevitable changes that start, even for years. An adult usually has 28 teeth, surrounded by shock absorbing ligaments, firmly attached to jawbone. Opposing these are the muscles of your face and neck, which can generate forces of over 120 kilograms of pressure.
With the loss of even 1 tooth, all the remaining teeth have to now carry the load, but because there is fewer to do so, the force on each tooth increases. With every further tooth loss, so the force on the remaining teeth is multiplied, inevitably leading to failure, and another lost tooth.
A partial denture can help to restore your appearance quite easily, but just as important is the stabilizing affect of replacing lost back teeth in order to accept and direct some of the extreme chewing force on to the denture, and away from the remaining teeth.
A partial denture is a replaceable item, but your natural teeth are not. They are irreplaceable, and even implants, the pinnacle of restorative dentistry, are a pale weak substitute for a healthy tooth.
By way of brutal comparison, your 28 natural teeth you have for free, but compared to 28 implants at $5000 each, this gives your natural teeth an asset value of $140000, which can be protected for life with 3 minutes per day cleaning.
Crowns and Bridges
An existing tooth that has been damaged may be restored with a crown, which is cemented over the tooth after it has been prepared (reduced in size) to accept the crown.
A bridge is multiple crowns fused together to span a gap caused by tooth loss.
Implants are titanium screws that are inserted into the jawbone, where they bond to bone cells, and eventually become fused to the bone. These can serve as anchor points for dentures, crowns, and bridges.
